Dear Patient, We’re celebrating our First Anniversary! It’s been a wonderful year and we thank you – our patients and friends – for making it possible. Your support, encouragement, suggestions and kind words are deeply appreciated as we continue to develop a premiere Women’s Health Center. As always, our goal is to provide you with the most up-to-date medical information and state-of-the-art gynecologic care… tailored to your unique needs. To that end, we are pleased to announce that we’ve added additional services that will help us keep you in the best of health. General Services: Well-Woman Although we specialize in gynecologic surgery, we want to ensure you that we provide all the traditional gynecology services you have come to expect from us. We see patients for annual exams and have mammography, ultrasound and full laboratory services on-site, making it easy for you to have these performed at the time of your exam should it be necessary. Our goal is to keep you healthy and we screen for a variety of health problems, review changes in your health history and address any concerns you have, keeping in mind that early identification of problems allows for more treatment options and a greater chance of success. We can also make referrals to other physicians for any additional services you may need. Center for Advanced Gynecologic Surgery: Gynecologic Surgery As you know, our practice is unique in that we focus on Gynecology. This allows us to provide more sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic technologies than you might find in a practice that combines Gynecology with Obstetrics. Both Dr. Edward Beadle and Dr. James Presthus are leaders in Gynecologic surgery both locally and nationally. We instruct other physicians, write chapters for surgical textbooks, publish and conduct clinical research on the latest treatments and provide consultation to numerous medical and surgical companies giving them valuable insight into the needs of female patients. We also perform the most sophisticated gynecologic surgery, from minimally invasive procedures to radical pelvic surgery for cancer. To highlight this strength of our clinic we have created the Center for Advanced Gynecologic Surgery. This clinic will address issues such as: endometriosis, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, pelvic floor support, uterine fibroids, abnormal menstruation, infertility, contraception and cancers of the pelvic organs. For complex conditions such as these there are often many treatment options and the goal of the clinic is to give our patients everything necessary to make informed choices. We’ll perform a comprehensive evaluation of symptoms, help you completely understand your condition and present a range of potential treatments from medical therapy to different types of surgeries. We are also available to provide a second opinion to anyone considering gynecologic surgery. Essure: Permanent Contraception We are the first clinic in Minneapolis to offer Essure– an exciting new permanent contraceptive device that replaces traditional tubal ligation. With Essure, the fallopian tubes are blocked with micro-plugs. A device called a hysteroscope is used to view the tubes and guide placement of the plugs. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia, and there is no incision. Most patients can return to full activity the following day. The device does not contain any hormones and will not change menstrual patterns. In clinical studies of more than 600 women, the effectiveness of Essure was 99.8% at two years of follow-up. This procedure should only be considered by patients who are sure they do not want any more pregnancies. For more information, please visit www.essure.com. PRIME PLUS/Red Hot Mamas®: Menopause In America, 4000 new women enter menopause each day. This can be a confusing time of life and we want to be a reliable source of current information about menopause and women’s health. PRIME PLUS/Red Hot Mamas® is a leading provider of menopause education whose mission is to empower women to become educated healthcare consumers and active participants in menopause management. We are the only clinic in Minneapolis to team up with this group to provide educational and support-oriented programs to the community. Topics will include: “The Transition into Menopause”, “Living a Healthy Lifestyle”, “Treatment Options: Hormonal vs. Alternative”, and others dealing with breast issues, osteoporosis, heart disease, urinary incontinence and sexual health. Dr. Edward Beadle and Dr. James Presthus will present some of the topics; others will be presented by speakers who are nationally recognized for their expertise. These programs will be offered to our patients first. As space allows, we welcome others who have an interest in menopause. If you would like information about the dates and locations for the programs, please call us at 952-893-9100, log onto www.mngyn.com or e-mail us at info@mngyn.com. SURx: Incontinence Stress incontinence is a loss of urine that occurs with a sudden increase in abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing or laughing. It affects approximately four out of 10 women. The condition can almost always be improved or cured. The FDA has recently approved SURx, a new treatment for stress incontinence, and currently we are the only clinic in Minnesota offering this to our patients. This outpatient procedure uses radio frequency (electrical) energy to shrink slack tissues around the urethra and provide additional support to the pelvic floor. There is very little discomfort and there is no catheter required after the procedure. SURx is less invasive, safer and effective for women who experience mild to moderate incontinence. Women with severe symptoms may not be candidates for SURx. However, we also offer a complete diagnostic assessment and therapeutic options ranging from medication or physical therapy to more advanced surgical procedures. To learn more, please visit www.surx.com. Botox®: Vulvar/Vaginal Pain It’s not just for wrinkles. Botox® has been used for years to treat spastic muscle disorders. Knowing that, we wondered if it might be effective in other areas of pain and inflammation. We are now working with Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox®, to investigate other uses. If the results are encouraging, it could lead to formal clinical trials. Included in our investigation is the potential to use Botox® for vulvodynia, vulvar vestibulitis and vaginismus. These are painful conditions of the vulvar and vaginal area that mimic severe infection, but with more intense symptoms that are not relieved by standard treatments. These conditions can be chronic, disabling and frustrating for affected women, many of whom are unable to have intercourse without pain. Preliminary results with the Botox® injections have been encouraging; all patients tolerated the treatment with minimal discomfort. Botox® is also being studied for the relief of Migraine headaches, urinary urgency and dysmenorrhea (painful periods). If you are interested, please contact us and we will update you on the status of our investigations. Bone Density Scan: Osteoporosis One in two women over the age of 50 will endure a fracture related to osteoporosis. Many of these fractures can be prevented. A full Dexa scan of both hips and the lower spine takes less than 10 minutes and can reveal if you have the disease or your degree of risk. You don’t even need to take your clothes off. (Screening tests that scan the heel or finger are not as reliable.) The bone density scan has become invaluable in making decisions about how to manage osteoporosis and there are several excellent options available for preventing and/or treating the disease. Referrals and Free Consultations: Thanks to our Patients To thank you for all your support, we will continue to offer a coupon for a free MicroPeel facial ($70 value) for each new patient you refer to our office. If you have referred a patient and haven’t received a coupon, please call and we’ll send you one. We are also offering a free ten-minute consultation for anyone interested in learning about the Essure™ device for permanent contraception (see above), the SURx treatment for incontinence (see above) or the NovaSure™ treatment for excessive menstrual bleeding. If you are interested in a consultation, please let the receptionist know when you call to schedule your appointment. For more information about Essure™, NovaSure™ or SURx, visit www.essure.com, www.novasure.com or www.surx.com. Patient Education: Information “Doctor” is derived from the Latin word “teacher,” and at our practice we strive to teach as well as treat. Informed patients are able to make the best decisions about healthcare that is right for them. However, it is difficult to absorb all the information available, and it is often tough to separate fact from fiction. We welcome your questions, and will always do our best to answer them. We are also involved with community education. If you have a group interested in learning more about any Gynecology topic, contact us and we will do our best to provide either a physician or nurse practitioner to speak.
We hope you find this letter informative. If you would like additional information about any of these topics, please call or make an appointment for a consultation. If you are not interested in being updated about our practice, please call us at 952-893-9100 and we will remove you from our mailing list. Likewise, if you know someone who would be interested in hearing from us, please call and leave their name and address. As our practice evolves, we want to stay focused on our mission to be “Your Partner in Women’s Health.” Let us know if you have suggestions for improving our clinic, or if there are services you’d like to see us provide. We wish all of you the best in 2003 and look forward to seeing you. With warmest regards, Edward M. Beadle
